One of my favorite areas is the Salzkammergut region with places like Hallstatt but also many smaller villages around it that stay much calmer. The local culture is another highlight. Try the traditional Austrian food like schnitzel, dumplings and hot gluhwein after your walk. In December some villages have small Christmas markets but even without them the atmosphere feels festive and warm. People here still keep old traditions which makes staying here feel special.

Best time is December to February for the full winter experience though January is usually the quietest. Bring good winter boots and warm layers because temperatures can drop quickly once the sun goes down.
