If you are a fan of train journeys with beautiful views then Switzerland takes it to another level. The panoramic trains here glide through the Alps connecting charming mountain villages with views that actually take your breath away.
The Glacier Express is probably the most famous. It runs between St Moritz and Zermatt and shows you everything Switzerland is known for, snow capped peaks, green valleys, deep gorges and old wooden chalets. The big windows make you feel like you are floating through the landscape. Another standout is the Bernina Express which crosses the Alps and even goes into Italy. The route includes dramatic bridges and curves where you can see the train winding below you from the window.
These trains dont just pass through empty nature. They stop in small mountain villages that look exactly like cinematic small towns. Think car free streets, flower covered balconies and cafes with direct view of the Matterhorn or Jungfrau. Its easy to get off in one village, spend a night or two and continue the next day.
I traveled solo on some of these routes and it felt very comfortable. You meet other travelers, have nice conversations and then return to your own thoughts while staring at the mountains. Many of these alpine villages now have good internet in guesthouses and small hotels. This makes them excellent places for remote work. Imagine finishing your tasks in the morning then stepping out for a short hike with fresh mountain air all around.
The GoldenPass line is also worth it especially if you go from Lucerne towards Montreux. The change from lakes to high Alps is really impressive. Seats are comfortable, there is food service and the trains run smoothly even in winter.
Best time depends on what you want. Summer brings green meadows and full hiking possibilities. Autumn gives beautiful colors and fewer people. Winter turns everything into a real snow wonderland though some routes can have delays if heavy snow falls.
These panoramic trains are more than transport. They are the experience itself. Switzerland made it easy and beautiful to explore the Alps without driving. If you love slow travel combined with stunning scenery this is one of the best ways to do it in Europe. You will arrive at your destination already relaxed and full of beautiful memories.
